First initiated in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is North America's longest-running Citizen Science project.

Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. Fuelled by the dedication and commitment of volunteers, all Christmas Bird Counts are conducted between December 14 to January 5, inclusive dates, each season. The information collected forms one of the world's largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. Counts takes place in an established 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. The counts are usually organized by a birding club, naturalist organization or an individual compiler. A map view of the areas included in the 120th CBC can be found here. Find your location and click on the circle to find the local count compiler, contact information and where the bird count is taking place.
